The usefulness and effects of a lot of modern inventions are under debate. We have greatly improved transportation, but at a severe cost to our environment. People love television, but some claim it has created a world of lazy people. Of all the great things to come from modern technology, none has affected us as profoundly as the Internet. It is a reliable, always-on source for information and entertainment. Another important aspect that has arisen from it is the social media network.
The Internet and its ever increasing popularity has simplified many things. You can shop online, even ordering your groceries and clothes. This has almost eliminated the necessity of leaving your home. People can stay in touch, regardless of where they are. If someone has a laptop or cell phone, accessing the web or their email is a very simple matter. You can play games, watch movies, listen to music and, in some cases, even work. It can all be done from the comfort of your own home, via your computer.
It all may have started with websites called message boards. They allowed for open communication with people everywhere. The main problem with them was that they did not provide for instantaneous communication. You would have to type up posts and it would take time for them to go public. Then you had to sit and wait for other users to read it and respond. The social media network, however, allows for real time communicating.
These sites allow you to post content virtually instantly. Your friends or followers can then read it immediately. Neither your location, nor theirs, is a factor. You can be in Africa, Russia, or Canada. It requires no special action on anyone’s part, other than being on the website. Content is also stored, meaning late-comers can read it no matter when they find the site.
Memberships can be used for marketing, sales, creating a personal brand, or just making friends. They can be a very effective means of promoting your work or website. Long-distance relationships are no longer a hassle. You never have to feel like you are apart. A chat by social media makes it feel as if you are together every moment. They process data so fast it appears on another users; screen within milliseconds of your hitting the send button or enter key.
There are tons of ways to use them to interact. People can play games, even with large groups of people. They allow you to pretend you are a spy, growing a crop or running the mafia. Opt-outs are possible for those who do not like these aspects.
There are those who feel they are called ’social’ for a reason and disapprove of other uses. Many use them to share their thoughts or just chat. Anyone of any belief or race can enjoy these sites.
Some people no longer know how to function if they cannot use the social media.
